How Retail Theft Affects YOU, The Consumer

Even if you've never stolen anything in your life, you are affected by retail theft, including shoplifting and internal, or employee, theft. You pay for it. That's right, the retailers have to budget for losses based on trends in theft, and they pass that cost straight on to you, the loyal customer. Some may say that isn't fair, but the retail company does not just "eat" that loss. Stockholders wouldn't like that very much.

"Retail theft also hits consumers, according to retailers. According to Joe LaRocca, vice president of loss prevention at the National Retail Federation, the cost of retail theft often gets passed down to the consumer, "retail theft does not only affect the bottom line. When criminals steal from retailers, consumers pay higher prices," he said in a release."

So, the next time you're complaining about the high price of your favorite jeans, or that purse you just have to have; remember, the shoplifter is helping to drive your cost up. It seems like society looks at shoplifting as a "not-so-serious" crime, but when you take the full problem into account, and you look closely at the numbers, you will see that, if theft costs retailers $35 to $40 Billion this year, then it is also costing us that much.

Every time you go to a cash register at your favorite grocery or department store, you're helping to pay for the shoplifter's salary. The cost is passed directly on to US. But the retailers are not to blame, the thieves are.
